The Subaru Legacy is a mid-size car built by the Japanese company Fuji Heavy Industries, and manufactured by its division Subaru since 1989, and is available as a sedan or wagon. Part of the original design goals for the Subaru Legacy model was to provide Subaru a vehicle in which they could compete in the lucrative North American midsize market against competitors Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Higher performance variants of the Subaru Legacy are offered as competitive alternatives to compact executive cars such as the Audi A4, Alfa Romeo 159 and BMW 3 Series. The Subaru Legacy also serves as Subaru's flagship car.

Subaru Legacy

In 1995, Subaru created the Outback trim package on the base model Subaru Legacy wagon "L", that primarily consisted of the heavy cloth interior, berber carpet floor mats, a luggage rack and fog lights with a standard height suspension. The 1996 model added raised ground clearance, raised roof-line and introduced the larger 2.5-liter, EJ25D engine (Automatic transmissions only until 1997), and was known as the Legacy Outback until 1999. In 2000, it became its own unique model, known simply as the Outback.

It is unique in its class for offering all wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Subaru Legacy bears the name Liberty in Australia out of deference for Subaru Legacy Australia, a veterans' assistance organization. As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacies have been built since its 1989 introduction.

First generation (1989–1994) - BC, BJ, BF
The introduction of the Subaru Legacy was a notable departure from Subaru products in the past. The Legacy was formally released January 23, 1989 in Japan, with an introductory price of ¥2,550,000 for the turbocharged RS (approx. USD $18,800 at 1989 yen exchange rate). The first Subaru Legacy was available at Japanese dealerships on February 1, 1989, with worldwide distribution starting in 1990.

Second generation (1994–1999) - BD, BG, BK
Second generation Subaru Legacy sales in Japan began October 7, 1993, and an introductory price of ¥2,753,000 for the twin turbo GT (approx USD $25,250 at 1993 yen exchange rate), with an introduction for model year 1995 in North America with a full body and chassis revision. The exterior was designed by Olivier Boulay, who was hired by Subaru on a short-term basis. The tail light appearance on both the sedan and wagon was influenced by the taillights on the SVX. In 1996, Subaru decided to make AWD standard equipment in all vehicles produced for the North American market from that year to today's current date. Subaru still offered a choice between FWD and AWD for its domestic market vehicles for this generation. The increased ground clearance Outback was introduced with this generation in 1995 with AWD only internationally, and the air suspension with height control was no longer offered.

Third generation (1998–2003) - BE, BH
Subaru launched the third generation Japanese and world-market Subaru Legacy in June 1998, while the North American model started production in late 1999 as a 2000 model, also known as the BE for sedan models and BH for wagons. European-market and Japanese models ranged from a normally aspirated 2.0 L flat-4 to the EZ30 flat-6 in the 3.0R model (European and Japanese trim level designation), with the twin turbo that was offered in the previous generation still offered on performance models. In the US market the third generation Subaru Legacy went on sale with the 2.5 L EJ251 Engine standard. In 2001 the EZ30, a newly designed 3.0 L H6 was offered in the Outbacks. The engine now met California's LEV emission standard.

Fourth generation (2003–2009) - BL, BP
On May 23, 2003, Fuji Heavy Industries debuted the redesigned Subaru Legacy , known as the BL for sedan models and BP for wagons. It was released worldwide in 2004, with Subaru Indiana Automotive commencing production in January 2004 for the North American markets. The Subaru Legacy was presented the 2003–2004 Japan Car of the Year, Subaru's first win for the award. Lance Armstrong was used as a spokesman for both the sedan and wagon, and Sheryl Crow sang her 1996 hit "Everyday Is a Winding Road" in USA market commercials.

Fifth generation (2009–) - BM, BR
In 2009, a Subaru Legacy concept was designed to commemorate 20th anniversary of the model, reported to be the basis of the production version of the then upcoming fifth generation Subaru Legacy. The concept vehicle was unveiled at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

Production of the fifth generation 2010 Subaru Legacy began the last week of May 2009 at the Indiana location, and was unveiled at the 2009 New York Auto Show. According to the Subaru website in Japan, the Legacy was introduced in Japan on May 20, 2009. The Subaru Legacy B4 2.5GT tS tuned by STi was introduced to Japan June 12, 2010. May 2010, the "EyeSight" feature introduced on the previous generation Subaru Legacy was re-introduced on the Japan-spec Touring Wagon and Outback.

The Subaru Outback is a vehicle manufactured by Fuji Heavy Industries since 1995. Its original concept originated with Subaru of America, which was suffering from slumping sales in the mid-1990s partly due to a lack of an entry in the then-burgeoning sport utility vehicle market. Lacking the finances to design an all-new sport utility vehicle, Subaru decided to add body cladding and a suspension lift to their Legacy wagon. Christened the Legacy Subaru Outback, after the rugged areas of Australia, Australian actor Paul Hogan was the spokesman in the North American market, playing off the Australian name of the vehicle and portraying the vehicle as a capable and more efficient alternative to large, truck-based SUVs.

All Subaru Outbacks sold worldwide are equipped with all-wheel drive as standard equipment, the only drivetrain setup available.

Sales exceeded expectations, with Tim Mahoney, Senior Vice President of Subaru of America stating " saved our company."

Subaru introduced the Subaru Outback to Japan as the Legacy Grand Wagon–then renamed Legacy Lancaster in model year 1997. In 2004, the Subaru Outback name was adopted worldwide and moved to its own model line (except in Japan). All vehicles in the Outback line are derived from Subaru's Legacy, except the Outback Sport (aka Impreza Outback), which is derived from the Impreza hatchback.

Some credit Subaru for inventing the crossover genre with the Subaru Outback, while others point to it as the first in a resurgence of a class of vehicles that started with American Motors' Eagle wagon, launched in 1979.

First generation (1995–1999)
The Legacy Subaru Outback was formally introduced to the North American market at the 1994 New York Auto Show, and was known in Japan starting August 1995 as the Legacy Grand Wagon, and in Australia as the Subaru Outback, a trim package with normal ground clearance but an "SUV look" with two-tone paint and fog lights. For the 1994 model year, the Legacy wagon in the North American market was available as the Alpine Sport and Sun Sport, which were Value Option Packages included on the "L" trim level wagon, and graphics denoting the option package installed. In Japan the Legacy wagon was called the Legacy Touring Wagon so the Grand wagon nomenclature was meant to signify a more grand, luxurious approach to equipment offered. The exterior was designed by Olivier Boulay, who was hired by Subaru on a short-term basis.

Subaru Outback

Second generation (2000–2004)
Based on the third generation Legacy, the Subaru Outback became its own model and the Legacy SUS remained unique to North America, and was realigned with the Subaru Outback Limited package, offering the sedan, with an optional horizontal six-cylinder engine, also optional on the wagon. This bodystyle was introduced to Japan September 1998, and was called the Lancaster for the second generation, with the six-cylinder in Japan called the Lancaster 6. The name Lancaster is used for cities in England, Australia, Canada and the United States. The USA-spec Outback was available starting in 2000. The Outback saw a competitor from Nissan in Japan only called the Nissan Avenir Blaster with a similar appearance to the Outback starting October 17, 2000.

Third generation (2003–2009)
October 22, 2003, with the debut of the fourth-generation Legacy at the 60th Frankfurt Auto Show, the Subaru Outback name is now being used in all markets with the launch of the third-generation Outback wagon, in order to rationalize the name Outback, which prior to then had only been used in export markets. Models equipped with a 3.0 L H6 were introduced at the 2004 Chicago Auto Show. The ground clearance is 8.5 in (220 mm).

Fourth generation (2009–present)
The fourth generation Subaru Outback was introduced in April 2009 at the New York Auto Show, the fifteenth anniversary of the first Outback's introduction at the same event. The Subaru Outback was introduced in Japan May 20, 2009. The "Legacy" prefix has been dropped internationally. Air Bags are offered for the driver and front passenger, side bolster airbags for front seats on the outer edge, side curtain airbags for front and rear passengers and a knee bolster air bag for the driver.

Subaru Forester

The Subaru Forester is a crossover with either a front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive drivetrain. It's been continually manufactured since 1997 by Fuji Heavy Industries and sold under the Subaru brand. Available in Japan from 1997, the Forester shares its platform with the Impreza.

First generation (SF, 1997–2002)
The Subaru Forester was introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show November 1995 as the Streega concept, and made available for sale February 1997 in Japan, and to the US market in 1998 using the Impreza platform but with the larger 2.5 liter DOHC EJ25D four-cylinder boxer engine from the Outback, making 165 hp (123 kW) at 5600 rpm and 162 lb·ft (220 N·m) of torque at 4000 rpm. In Japan, the Subaru Forester replaced the Subaru Impreza Gravel Express, known in the USA as the Subaru Outback Sport. The Subaru Forester appeared after the introduction of the Nissan Rasheen in Japan with a similar appearance, and the Forester's Japanese competitors include the Toyota RAV4, the Honda CR-V, the Mitsubishi RVR, and the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Due to the Subaru Forester's low center of gravity, it meets the United States federal safety standards for Passenger Vehicles, and does not require a risk of rollover warning label on the driver's visor. Size and price wise it fits between the shared Impreza platform, and the larger Legacy.

Second generation (SG, 2003–2008)
A second generation was introduced in 2003, based on the new Impreza platform, featuring several fine-tune improvements over the past model. The 2003 Subaru Forester features weight-saving refinements such as an aluminum hood, perforated rails, and a hydro-formed front sub-frame. The most noticeable change was the offering of 2.5 L versions (normally aspirated and turbocharged) and in the U.S. the introduction of the turbo charged 2.5L model.

Third generation (SH, 2008–present)
The MY2008 Subaru Forester was unveiled in Japan on December 25, 2007. The North American version debuted at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The third generation Subaru Forester was styled by Subaru Chief Designer Mamoru Ishii. The dimensions derive from engineers using the basic body structure of the Japanese-spec Impreza wagon with the rear platform of the U.S.-spec Impreza sedan. The Forester's wheelbase has increased 3.5 inches (89 mm), with overall increases of 3.0 inches (76 mm) in length, 1.8 inches (46 mm) in width and 4.3 inches (110 mm) in height. Notably, the third generation Subaru Forester forgoes the frameless side windows used on Subarus since the early 1970s. The third generation embraces the car based SUV, and leaves behind the older wagon design; it's larger in nearly every dimension, taller, and features a sloping roof line with more cargo space.

The Subaru Forester XTI concept vehicle uses the 2.5 liter intercooled turbo engine from Subaru WRX STI, 6-speed manual transmission, 18 x 8-inch S204 forged alloy wheels with Yokohama Advan Neova 255/40R18 performance tires, adjustable coil-over suspension, Brembo brakes with 4-piston front calipers, 2-piston rear calipers, Super Sport ABS and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), leather and Alcantara sport seats, a special instrument cluster, front dash and center console and leather-wrapped steering wheel. Engine is rated 315 hp (235 kW) and 300 lb·ft (410 N·m) torque. The vehicle was unveiled in 2008 SEMA show.

The Subaru Impreza is a compact car that was first introduced by Fuji Heavy Industries in 1993 after the popular Leone/Loyale was cancelled with the aging EA series engine. The Subaru Impreza was introduced with the popular EJ series engine found in the larger Subaru Legacy. In Japan, the Subaru Impreza sells more than the larger Legacy due to Japanese vehicle size legislation, which offers a reduced tax liability because of its smaller exterior dimensions.

Compared to vehicles in a similar size class such as Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Nissan Sentra, Suzuki SX4, Mitsubishi Lancer (including Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution) and Mazda Protegé/Mazda Axela, only the Subaru Impreza has always offered AWD. Subaru Impreza made this feature standard equipment in all trims, while its competitor, Mitsubishi Lancer puts this feature to Ralliart trims and Evolution versions. Subaru produces a lower volume of slightly upscale, well-equipped, sportier Subaru Impreza models, unlike other contemporaries in the compact category that offer no-frills base trims.

Subaru chose to continue their longstanding use of the boxer engine in the Subaru Impreza. According to Subaru, their configuration of the engine inline with the transmission minimizes body roll due to the lower center of gravity compared with offset engines in most other vehicles. This is similar to the design of the Citroen 2CV, providing light weight and compact, economic design for basic cars. The boxer design provides good vibration mitigation due to the principles of a balanced engine because the movement of each piston is largely countered by a piston in the opposing cylinder bank, eliminating the need for a counter-rotating weighted crankshaft (harmonic balancer), but with some vibration from offsets. Torque steer is also reduced with this type of powertrain layout since the front drive shafts are of equal length and weight.

Subaru Impreza

First generation (GC/GF/GM)
Introduced in November 1993, the Subaru Impreza was offered in either front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) versions and as a four-door sedan/saloon or five-door station wagon/estate. According to a Motor Trend article written March 1992 on page 26, the name of Subaru's new compact was, initially, to be called the Loyale, displaying an official photograph of the 4-door sedan. In late 1995, a two-door coupe was introduced. The Subaru Impreza, like many Subaru-built cars, was equipped with a flat engine, a distinguishing Subaru characteristic. Initial engine choices included 1.6 L, 1.8 L and 2.0 L naturally aspirated engines as well as the turbocharged and intercooled 2.0 L engine. The basic turbocharged motor, the EJ20, produced from 179 kW (243 PS; 240 bhp) to 210 kW (286 PS; 282 bhp) in Japanese market WRX trim depending on model and year. Outside Japan, the turbocharged model was initially rated at 155 kW (211 PS; 208 bhp) and marketed as the 2.0 Turbo, 2.0 GT, 2.0 GT Turbo, 2.0 WRX, or Turbo 2000 AWD in the United Kingdom.

Second generation (GD/GG)
Subaru introduced the "New Age" Subaru Impreza to the world market in 2001. The second generation Impreza was intended to be larger, safer, stiffer, more refined, and more responsive. The WRX Sedan had a 20 mm (0.8 in) wider track than its predecessor to aid handling, while the wagon remained the same. The coupe model was no longer available. The headlamp styling of the New Age Subaru Impreza was polarizing, but the improvements to the car brought greater mainstream acceptance.

Third generation (GE/GH/GR/GV)
On 2 April 2007, Subaru officially unveiled the next generation Subaru Impreza WRX at the 2007 New York Auto Show. In contrast to its usual rival, the Mitsubishi Lancer, the Subaru Impreza WRX is increasingly being positioned as a 'practical' performance car - the suspension for instance is more accommodating of everyday roads. Similar to the marketing of the Lancer, Subaru plans to offer a lower volume of slightly upscale, well-equipped, sportier Subaru Impreza models, unlike other contemporaries such as the Honda Civic, Mazda3, and Toyota Corolla that offer no-frills base trims. The new Impreza is offered as both a 4-door sedan and 5-door hatchback.

Fourth generation (GP/GJ)
The fourth generation Subaru Impreza was unveiled on 20 April 2011 at the New York Auto Show, as its predecessor was, with a launch scheduled for autumn of the same year. It will be primarily an evolutionary design, remaining nearly the same size but being lighter and more fuel efficient and featuring a host of technical improvements as well as better packaging (Leading to greater interior space), higher quality materials in the interior, and new styling sharing a family resemblance with the fifth generation Subaru Legacy. The new design achieves its improved fuel economy of 36mpg highway (with CVT transmission) primarily by utilizing a new all aluminum 2 liter engine with making 148 hp, down from the previous generation's 170hp generated using a 2.5 liter engine. Despite the reduced power, Subaru claims that the new Subaru Impreza is 0.3 second quicker from 0-60 than the previous generation when equipped with the CVT transmission, due to reduced weight. Subaru anticipates that the improved fuel economy will attract new customers while enthusiasts will be drawn to the performance oriented WRX and WRX STI models. The last-generation high-performance WRX variants will continue production until new versions will be released in 2013. It has been announced that the new Subaru Impreza will be built in Japan and not Indiana. The 2012 American Subaru Impreza might be affected by the assembly plant shutdowns in Japan because of the March 2011 Earthquake and power shortages.

Subaru is the automobile manufacturing division of Japanese transportation conglomerate Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI).

Subaru is internationally known for their use of the boxer engine layout similar to those in cars like the Volkswagen Beetle and Porsche 911, in most of their vehicles above 1500 cc as well as their use of the all wheel drive drive-train layout, the 4x4 first introduced in 1972, and the AWD became standard equipment for mid-size and smaller cars in most international markets as of 1996, and is now standard in all US market Subaru vehicles. They also offer many turbocharged versions of their passenger cars, such as the sporty Impreza WRX.

Fuji Heavy Industries, the parent company of Subaru, is currently in a partial partnership with Toyota Motor Corporation, which owns 16.5% of FHI.

Subaru is the Japanese name for the Pleiades star cluster, which in turn inspires the Subaru logo and alludes to the six companies that merged to create FHI.

FHI started out as The Aircraft Research Laboratory in 1915 headed by Chikuhei Nakajima. In 1932, the company was reorganized as Nakajima Aircraft Company, Ltd and soon became the primary manufacturer of aircraft for Japan during World War II. At the end of the Second World War Nakajima Aircraft was again reorganized, this time as Fuji Sangyo Co, Ltd. In 1946, the company created the Fuji Rabbit motor scooter with spare aircraft parts from the war. In 1950, Fuji Sangyo was divided into 12 smaller corporations according to the Japanese Government's 1950 Corporate Credit Rearrangement Act, anti-zaibatsu legislation, but between 1953 and 1955, four of these corporations and a newly formed corporation Fuji Kogyo, a scooter manufacturer; coachbuilders Fuji Jidosha; engine manufacturers Omiya Fuji Kogyo; chassis builders Utsunomiya Sharyo and the Tokyo Fuji Dangyo trading company decided to merge to form the Fuji Heavy Industries known today.

The Subaru Tribeca looks somewhat like the Lexus RX and is an upscale version of the latter. The interiors of the Subaru Tribeca are continuation of the previous version with enhancements here and there. The Tribeca’ styling has certain uniqueness about it.

Somewhere in the 1990’s there was a lot of demand for SUV’s in the American Automobile market. Subaru came out with their first SUV called the Subaru Outback at times like this and it was a huge success derived directly from the need and which managed to serve the need well beyond.

It has been almost two decades since the Subaru Legacy debuted into the car world and this one particular model is Subaru’s long lived model which has been in production ever since. The main reason is it came with the all wheel drive for the first time.

The Subaru Impreza WRX is a restyled version of the Subaru Impreza and in addition is powered with a 293 horsepower WRX STI. The new feature in this car is the Subaru dual stage advanced air bag system. The Subaru Impreza WRX sports a new grille which looks like a mesh which is directly inspired from the company’s heritage of air crafts. The body has styled headlights with tinted smoky glass. The car also features the day time running lights which is more of a safety feature.

The Fuji heavy Industries Ltd unveiled the Subaru Impreza WRC 2006 prototype which is basically an experimental model of rally car based on the platform of the new Subaru Impreza for the first time at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in 2006 in September.
